Applesauce Chocolate Cake
1 cup of Sugar 1/2 cup of shortening 1 3/4 cup of applesauce
2 cups of flour 2 teaspoons of soda 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon of cloves 1/4 teaspoon of allspice
3 tablespoons of cocoa 1 tablespoon of cornstarch 1 cup of raisins 1/2 cup of nuts, chopped |

Sift dry ingredients. Add to creamed shortening and sugar, alternatively with applesauce. Sift cornstarch over nuts and raisins; add to batter. Bake at 350ºF. for 40 minutes or until done, in a 13 x 9 inch pan.
Applesauce Chocolate Cake
3 cups of Gold Medal flour 1 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
1/4 teaspoon of salt 1/2 teaspoon of cloves 1 teaspoon of nutmeg 1 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon 1/2 cup of ground chocolate
3/4 cup of butter 1 1/2 cups of sugar 2 medium eggs 2 cups of thick applesauce 1 1/2 cups of raisins 1 1/2 cups of coarsely chopped walnuts
Sift dry ingredients and chocolate together. Cream butter and sugar. Add the eggs, one at a time beating well. Alternately add dry ingredients and applesauce, beating until smooth after each addition. Add raisins and nuts which have been mixed together. Turn into a greased paper-lined 9 x 12 inch pan. Bake at 350ºF.
for 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes. Serves 18.
